Ned Kelly was a folk hero - and cop killer - in Australia, who was hung in 1880. He is immortalised in many forms of Australian culture, perhaps most notably in Sidney Nolan's series of paintings, whose simple depiction of Kelly's metal helmet has become iconic.
This song was inspired by the realisation that today there is a somewhat less celebrated 'threat' - women. Women who happen to wear burqas. Whether you think burqas are a symbol of oppression, a sign of the inexorable rise of Islam, traditional headgear, or something quite sensible to wear in a country with incredibly strong sun and record skin cancer rates, it can't be denied that there is a certain visual similarity between the twin 'threats' - Ned Kelly and women in burqas. Only one is celebrated however...
