And The Rain Came

from Lost Songs by The Nethered

/

about

I began writing shortly after the pandemic hit. I'd lost all my work and an opportunity to spend time alone with music at a friend's house arose. This was written not long after rain had finally extinguished the vast, seemingly endless bushfires that blackened south-eastern Australia over a six month period. Even though the drought had broken, impact of the long dry years was clearly visible where I was writing and recording in country NSW.

We hadn't had a lot of rain beyond the first mighty quenching of the fires. I was at Mark's place, alone and isolated, surrounded by bush and able to make as much noise as I liked. I was playing around recording a few instruments - a huluzi, a Thai flute, recorders, a sharnai, a punji and others. Out of nowhere, sheets and sheets of heavy rain cascaded from the sky. It almost felt like I had called it. I didn't know then that we would see two years of record-breaking rain, complete with '1000 year' floods. At this point, the rain still brought joy and relief – it felt like a blessing, not a curse.
