In The Moonlight

from Lost Songs by The Nethered

about

I once asked Auntie "what was the war like for you?" She was twenty when it was declared and I thought she could bring that time alive with her experiences.

"Oh, we didn't really notice" she replied.

I remember thinking this was strange. Norfolk had many airfields. Local young men went to war. As a nurse, she must have seen injuries. There was rationing, food shortages, children evacuated from London and sent to the safety of the country, blackouts, hedges ripped from the ground to create more farmland. Planes dropped unused bombs on Norfolk before they returned across the North Sea. People huddled around radios desperate for news it was all over.

Towards the end of her life, Auntie's memory of the more recent past began to slide away like a toboggan whose rope had fallen from her hand. As it did she talked about her youth more often.

One day the story in this song slipped out. In writing this song through her eyes a film played in my head of this moment, and I felt its full weight.
