Into The Marshes

My Auntie, who died just shy of her 100th birthday, told me that when she was young she was sent to live with cousins who ran a pub in rural North Norfolk.

People would come from miles around on Saturday nights and the pub would fill with music and song late into the night. One musician walked seven miles to play. Men would dance in hobnail boots on the flagstones.

One by one the old men would be asked to sing ‘their’ song, for which they were paid in beer.

She said “I suppose those songs are all gone now.” She’d never heard them before or since.

But perhaps those songs are not gone...
