Black Shuck

from Lost Songs by The Nethered

/

about

I grew up with the legend of Black Shuck, a large dog that roams East Anglia. For my generation it was a way to get us kids home before dark. “Go out and play and don’t come back until teatime” we were told. With no mobile phones to accompany us across the fields, heath, woods, rivers and mill races – places that felt like they belonged to us – parents needed something more than hunger to bring us home. My mum never used Black Shuck as a warning, but some of my friends were adamant he was real and we were always home by dusk. I didn't quite believe in him, but I didn't want to risk it.

This song is set in a time when the only light outside at night came from the moon or a bonfire.

It mentions ‘our John’. He was the the uncle my brother and I never knew. My understanding is that because he was epileptic he was put in an institution where he took his own life at the age of twenty.

This song is for our lost uncle, the brother mum and auntie never forgot or stopped loving.
